Halloween Safety and Haunted Houses
Stay Safe This Halloween Costumes: · Make sure costumes are short and snug and made of flame resistant material. Billowy capes and skirts can trip you up and catch fire if they brush up against jack-o-lanterns or candle flames. · Make sure shoes fit. Floppy shoes are hard to walk in and may make you trip. · Use non-toxic make-up rather than masks. Masks can block your vision. · Wear reflective tape on your costume and carry a flashlight so cars can see you. Always trick-or-treat in groups and cross at cross walks. Homes: · Turn your lights on. Black lights and strobe lights are fun, but make it difficult to see. · Don't use luminaries with candles. They may be knocked over easily and children's costumes may touch the flames and ignite. · Use a special LED "pumpkin light" for your jack-o-lantern, rather than a candle. They burn for up to 70 hours and are much safer than candles. Treats: · Check your children's treats before they eat them. Only allow store bought, wrapped candy. Planning a Haunted House? Contact Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Plans Review, 276-8433 or 274-6723 for guidelines to help ensure that your Haunted House is safe.
