Since July 2003, Hillsborough County has honored the families of fallen soldiers who were
connected to Hillsborough County and killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
As part of the dedication ceremony, the Board of County Commissioners presents a plaque with a photo
of the fallen soldier to his or her next of kin. Families can also visit the markers to view their name
engraved at the Joe Chillura Courthouse Square Memorial for Local Servicemen and Women Killed in the
Iraq War. The markers are located beneath the flagpoles in the northwest corner of the downtown Tampa
park.
